Embracing Simplicity: A week as Local in Paje, Zanzibar

Updated: Oct 29, 2023

The Indian Ocean stretches as far as the eye can see, its azure waters merging seamlessly with the sky on the horizon. As the soft, white sand meets my toes, I know I've arrived in Paje, a quaint oceanside village on the stunning island of Zanzibar. For one week, I've traded the luxuries of a resort for the simple life of a local, and I discovered the true essence of this enchanting place and now we call Paje home.

Day 1: Arrival and Warm Welcome

My journey began with a flight to Zanzibar followed by a scenic drive along large mango street fringed roads to Paje. The moment I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the locals. Paje is known for its friendly and welcoming community, and this became evident from the very start. My lodging for the week is a cozy bungalow owned by a local family, nestled just steps away from the beach and certainly our inspiration for Chokoro House Inn we run today. It was basic but comfortable, and I can hear the soothing sounds of the ocean as I drift off to sleep. No fancy resorts or high-rise hotels here - it's all about immersing yourself in the authentic village life.

Day 2: Breakfast at a Local Duka

I woke up early to the calls of roosters and the gentle lapping of the waves. This day, I decided to start my day at a local duka, a small convenience store. It's the heart of the community, where locals gather to share news, sip on chai tea, and nibble on freshly baked mandazi (deep-fried dough). Over my morning meal, I chatted with a few locals who were more than happy to share stories of their lives in Paje. Their warmth and genuine interest in my experience here made me feel like part of the family. It's hard not to smile when you're greeted with such hospitality. I visited Kuza Cave in Jambiani and spent late afternoon playing soccer with young adults and teenagers at one of the sandy fields near my hotel. It was so much fun experiencing the trash talking that went on during the game adding to the authenticity.

Day 3: A Day of Adventure

Zanzibar isn't all about lazing on the beach. The island offers a wealth of exciting activities, and this day, I decided to explore the waters. I join a group of local fishermen as they set out on their traditional wooden dhow to catch fish. As I help them cast the nets and later enjoy the fruits of our labor at a beachside barbecue, I'm reminded of the simplicity and satisfaction of living off the land and sea. The fishing experience is a reminder that life here is deeply connected to the ocean and the bounties it provides.

Day 4: Discovering Local Cuisine

Paje offers a delightful culinary journey, and this day I set out to explore its local cuisine. My taste buds were in for a treat with dishes like octopus curry (Zanzibar Pweza), coconut rice, and pilau. The flavors were a perfect fusion of Indian, Arabic, and African influences.

I visited a local family's home for lunch and I was welcomed into their kitchen. It's a hands-on experience as I help prepare the meal, learning the secrets of spice and flavor that make Zanzibari cuisine so unique. We dined together, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to enjoy a true taste of local life.

Day 5: Strolling Through the Village

I decided to spend a day simply strolling through Paje, soaking in its vibrant culture. The village is a patchwork of white washed rock buildings, and everywhere I look, I see children playing and locals going about their daily routines. A stop at a small crafts market introduced me to the artistic talents of the locals. Intricately designed jewelry, handwoven baskets, and vibrant fabrics caught my eye. These souvenirs not only support the local economy but also serve as a reminder of my time in Paje.

Day 6: A Cultural Exchange

One of the highlights of my trip is the opportunity to engage in cultural exchanges with the local community. I attend a traditional dance performance at Paje Beach where rhythmic drums and energetic dancers transported me to a world where music is a universal language. Later, I was invited to a Swahili cooking class at a local restaurant where I learned how to make some more local dishes. It was a fun and educational experience, allowing me to not only enjoy the flavors but also understand the deeper cultural significance of the food.

Day 7: Reflection and Farewell

As my week in Paje came to an end, I found myself deeply touched by the simplicity and authenticity of the local way of life. Living as a local has been a humbling experience, a reminder that happiness isn't always found in the trappings of modern life.

I spend my last day taking in the sunrise over the Indian Ocean, savoring the sounds of the waves and the feel of the sand beneath my feet. Paje has reminded me of the beauty of a slow-paced existence, one where community, connection, and the natural world take precedence.

Paje, Zanzibar, is a place where time slows down, and the rhythms of nature and community guide the way of life. My week living as a local in this oceanside village was a transformative experience, one that has rekindled my appreciation for simplicity and human connection. Paje, with its warm and welcoming community, has taught me that life's true treasures are found in the smiles of the people you meet, the stories they share, and the rich cultural tapestry that weaves this village together. In a world often overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of modernity, Paje stands as a reminder that sometimes, the most fulfilling journeys are the ones that lead us back to the heart of what it means to be human. I now call Paje home. Karibu Paje. Karibu Chokoro House!
