As the soft, white sand meets my toes, I know I've arrived in Paje, a quaint oceanside village on the stunning island of Zanzibar. For one week, I've traded the luxuries of a resort for the simple life of a local, and I discovered the true essence of this enchanting place and now we call Paje home.

My journey began with a flight to Zanzibar followed by a scenic drive along large mango street fringed roads to Paje. The moment I stepped out of the car, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the locals. Paje is known for its friendly and welcoming community, and this became evident from the very start. My lodging for the week is a cozy bungalow owned by a local family, nestled just steps away from the beach and certainly our inspiration for Chokoro House Inn we run today. It was basic but comfortable, and I can hear the soothing sounds of the ocean as I drift off to sleep. No fancy resorts or high-rise hotels here - it's all about immersing yourself in the authentic village life.

Day 2: Breakfast at a Local Duka

I woke up early to the calls of roosters and the gentle lapping of the waves. This day, I decided to start my day at a local duka, a small convenience store. It's the heart of the community, where locals gather to share news, sip on chai tea, and nibble on freshly baked mandazi (deep-fried dough). Over my morning meal, I chatted with a few locals who were more than happy to share stories of their lives in Paje. Their warmth and genuine interest in my experience here made me feel like part of the family. It's hard not to smile when you're greeted with such hospitality. I visited Kuza Cave in Jambiani and spent late afternoon playing soccer with young adults and teenagers at one of the sandy fields near my hotel. It was so much fun experiencing the trash talking that went on during the game adding to the authenticity.
